Looking for some fresh new music to listen to? Consider five-piece indie rock band Mother Mother. The Vancouver-born group has recently had a lot of success, and with the release of their newest album Eureka, they seem ready to shoot for the stars.
Mother Mother consists of frontman Ryan Guldemond on guitar and vocals, his sister Molly accompanies him on synthesizer and vocals, and Jasmin Parkin on completes the vocal trio. Keeping the beat are Jeremy Page on bass and horns and Ali Siadat on percussion.
The new-age band formed under the name Mother in 2005 and independently released their self-titled debut album the same year. In 2007, they did a double take on their name , and became Mother Mother. With their new name in tow, they re-released their album with Last Gang records, re-titling it Touch Up. The album had little mainstream attention, but captured the attention of young indie music lovers. However, in 2008, Mother Mother released another album, titled O My Heart, and this one succeeded in the mainstream world in a way that Touch Up hadn’t.
After O My Heart’s release, Mother Mother came in number one on campus radio in Canada for six weeks straight. O My Heart was also rated one of the top five best overall albums in 2008 by iTunes Canada. By 2010, one of O My Hearts tracks had received two Cadby Award nominations and a Canadian Radio Music Award nomination. O My Heart’s title track captured Record of the Week on BBC Radio 2’s Radcliffe and Maconie Show, and was included in Q Magazines Q50 for July 2010.
This success has helped Mother Mother gain a large fan base. With their newfound stardom they have undertaken the work that coincides with fame in the music industry. They were on tour across the country at the beginning of the year and visited Toronto in April. Jamming at the Pheonix Concert Theatre, they attracted many of today’s young music-lovers. Later this year, in late July they hit up Montreal. Clearly the band remembers their Canadian routes.
Eureka, released in March, held number one on the campus radio charts in Canada for four weeks. Mixed by Mike Fraser (who also worked with AC/DC, Franz Ferdinand and Elvis Costello), it’s a great album featuring songs with catchy melodies, intricate harmonies and clever lyrics. It has been called the band’s most tenacious and undaunted record to date.
Mother Mother’s frontman Ryan Guldemond has said that the band hopes to make more albums and do smaller tours over the next few years, but first they need to get better known and build their profile.
Mother Mother will certainly be a band to watch in years to come. Their talent, and pursuit of success seem to be taking them to new heights as the leading up-and-coming Canadian band.
