Rainy Saturday Movies

Hanna Lee, Arts & Entertainment Journalist

It’s Saturday morning and you have a whole day ahead of you—no homework, no classes, and no preoccupations. The day would be perfect, if not for the buckets of rain pouring down outside! So what can you do? Watch movies, of course!

After many hours of extensive research (also known as watching tons of movies), I have put together a Top 10 list of movies that are perfect for rainy Saturdays.

10.) Scott Pilgrim vs. The World: There was a ton of hype about this movie and I must admit that when I first saw the commercials I thought it looked terrible. However, after being dragged to the movie by friends, I was pleasantly surprised. It takes place in Toronto, which always means bonus movie points for Torontonians. It’s also the best kind of movie for a rainy day—a good soundtrack, an easy-to-follow plot, mind-numbing graphics and quirky characters. I was a little disappointed with the corny ending but the rest of the movie managed to make up for it.

9.) Mean Girls: If you’ve seen this movie, you know why it’s on the list. To everyone else: you know you want to see it, and here’s the perfect excuse! The movie explores gossip, lying, self-esteem and even has a monologue which sweeps across high school social issues. The movie is jam-packed with humour and tons of great quotes (“I’m sorry that people are so jealous of me… but I can’t help that I’m so popular.”). Of course it’s cheesy at parts, but such is expected of any teen movie. This is a classic.

8.) The Social Network: Facebook—the first thing most people check when they get home. Facebook seems to be what connects everyone. “Upload those photos on Facebook when you get home!” and “Put that on your status and tag me in it!” are commonly heard phrases. But where did this obsession come from? And is it true that Mark Zuckerberg, Facebook’s founder, stole the idea from someone else? Find the answers to these very mysterious questions and more in The Social Network, the not-so-boring docudrama about the founding of Facebook.

7.) Juno: Most people have seen this, but what better time than a rainy Saturday to watch it again? This heart-warming movie focuses on teen pregnancy, and will certainly entertain everyone. The amazing soundtrack and cast are an extra bonus to a great plot with lots of unexpected twists and turns. It’s where Ellen Page got her big break, so it has to have done something right!

6.) The Diary of a Wimpy Kid: You may find it strange that I’ve included a children’s movie in this list, but this film goes far beyond the low expectations of such films. The audience will learn to love the well-developed characters and fall in love with this charming film.

5.) Avatar: If you haven’t watched this movie, I suggest you go to the nearest store and rent it right now. This movie was considered the best movie of 2009 by many critics, and swept up 3 Oscars (nominated for 9). Although the plot isn’t fantastic on its own, the graphics and 3D effects will have you riding a psychological rollercoaster. It is a great adventure film to watch over and over.

4.) Inception:  A film people say you need to watch twice to appreciate. If you’re in the mood to concentrate, this is the rainy-day flick for you. Leonardo DiCaprio, science-fiction and an intense soundtrack make this a favourite. Get ready for a twist ending and lots of thrills.

3.) Meet the Parents: One of the few comedies to make the list that’s not a “chick flick”. The first piece of a three-part installment (third part yet to be released), Meet the Parents is about a man looking to impress his girlfriend’s parents. Unfortunately, there are some bumps and twists along the road. An easy-going film with a light attitude, this movie is great for lots of laughs.

2.) When in Rome: Finally, a romance movie! However, this is not the same old “boy meets girl” story. Beth, the main character, goes on a trip to Rome for her sister’s marriage and gets more than she bargained for! A great romantic-comedy to end off your day on a happy note.

1.) Orphan: If you’ve watched all the movies and are still not sleepy then keep reading. You may need some friends as company — it’s time for a horror movie. Watch as the seemingly innocent orphan Esther transforms into your worst nightmare. This is perfect for those sleepovers where you want your friends to sit around after the movie in shock and awe.

I hope this helps you enjoy the next rainy Saturday. Have fun and enjoy the popcorn!
