Every year, Earl Haig bustles with activity, events and spirit. This year will be no different. School organized events are a great chance to make the most of your time at Haig and participate in fun and games. Here are just a few of the upcoming events for the 2011 – 2012 year:
United Way Week runs from October 24th to the 28th, during which, a series of events run by Haig’s United Way Council dominate the main hall. Check out the bake sales, shaving cream tosses, raffles, and other activities during periods two and three. The week culminates with the Carnival, a hectic and spirited school-wide event. With booths sprawling throughout the main hall and spilling out into the large gym and second floor, the Carnival is sure to provide much entertainment. Each homeroom class is assigned a booth that students are in charge of planning, running and advertising. Activities range from selling snacks, to kissing booths, to musical performances. If you have a great idea for your class’ booth for this year’s carnival, make sure pass it on to your homeroom rep!
To keep up some friendly competition between the homerooms, prizes are awarded to the classes that raise the most money. The profits from United Way Week go to the organization itself, which aids charitable programs worldwide.
Later in the year, the United Way Council also runs the CN Tower Climb, an event that gives students the opportunity to ascend Toronto’s best-known structure at their own pace. Be sure to sign up for this event if you are athletic and like a challenge!
Like United Way Week, Earth Week is a series of fundraising activities. The Wildlife Conservationist Council, which works towards saving wildlife and wild lands, organizes the events. Earth Week focuses on promoting awareness of issues related to the environment, conservation, and wildlife, and encourages eco-friendly practices. Enjoy a week of trivia and a variety of other activities and sales in April. In keeping with the eco-friendly theme, Earl Haig participates in its own Earth Hour, during which classes turn off their lights and rely on natural, rather than artificial lighting.
Ready for another week of fun? March is host to Multicultural Week. If you enjoy delicious homemade food from around the world, make sure to stop by at the Multicultural Lunch in the main hall. The Multicultural Assembly that takes place during this week is an entertaining way to expand your knowledge of other cultures. Multicultural Week also allows Haigers to appreciate the diversity within the school (and taste delicious dim-sum, falafel and baklava!)
On an academic note, students are encouraged to check out the university and college fairs. Visit the cafeteria, where booths representing various universities will be set up. All students are welcome to ask questions about programs and requirements for university or college admission. The GTA University and College Fair will take place in October and the non-GTA Fair will be in November. These educational fairs are not to be missed!
That’s just a small taste of the many events for the 2011/2012 school year! For exact dates, check your student agenda and perk up your ears for announcements.
